According to leading health publications Woman’s World and First for Women, the new key to unlocking your secret weight loss ability is your thyroid. Which gave me an idea: one of my cats takes thyroid pills. Soon, veterinarians everywhere will be making huge profits selling !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! for human weight loss!

In some cases it’s legit. I know a few people who had undiagnosed thyroid issues and lost weight when they went on Synthroid. They also found it easier to cut down pounds after.

But those magazines are toilet paper. It’s Dr. Oz style schlock.

Did you know that if you peel a carrot and sleep with it inserted up your ass it will trick your metabolism into working hard all night? You’ll lose weight as you sleep!

*Insert pseudoscience babble here that uses big sciency words*

They’re not wrong...

Provided that you have a thyroid condition.

I’ve lost 15lbs in the past year by treating my hypothyroidism without making any lifestyle changes.

But that ‘trick’ has been on their front pages forever. The cure is synthoid, not super-antioxidant cocktail

Dear super market magazines; a thyroid isn’t a GTX 1080. It cannot be boosted or rebooted. It also cannot be supercharged, nitroused or defraged.

What if our thyroid will only boot into safe mode

“Melt off 4 belly inches every week” (LULZ) is a Trumpian-style claim, that’s for sure.

It’s got it all- shockingly worded, a fundamental misunderstanding of science and physiology, and a wild claim that’s easy to weasel out of.

Considering that these are almost exclusively sold in grocery checkouts, simply making claims about “eating less and moving more” would not bode well for the Tabloid-Grocery Cartel’s tenuous relationship. FWIW, I have never, ever seen anyone grab one of these and buy it.

Hi Sophia!

Wait! Methimazole is for inhibiting thyroid function. That’s going in the opposite direction from weight loss.

Yeah, synthroid will definitely cause weight loss, or rather reverse weight gain in hypothyroid patients, but there are all kinds of problems associated with too much. I sure hope none of these weight loss articles are suggesting using it as a weight loss pill.

Sophia has hyperthyroidism and goiter so that’s why she gets the Methimazole.

But it was quicker to mention the drug I already know she takes than have to search for something that would increase thyroid activity. ;)

So this reminds me of a story from my SIL, the country vet. Clinicians love this story.

A few years ago, there was a big interest in prescription oxycodone as a street drug (is there still? I don’t keep up). One night somebody broke into her clinic and rummaged through the dispensary. What medication did they take?

The oxytocin .

Reading is fundamental, kids.

I really hope not as it’s prescription drug abuse. To the best of my knowledge there’s no OTC drug for thyroid control. You probably know better than I, however.

I actually googled “thyroid reboot” out of curiosity, and because I’m allergic to getting my work done. There seems to a thing about promoting dietary therapy and selenium supplements to facilitate T4 and T3 production in the thyroid and discouraging use of what they call “goitrogenic foods” that supposedly inhibit iodine uptake. It mostly seems to be oriented toward people with thyroid problems like Hashimotos disease. I don’t know if there is any value at all to the common person who wants to lose weight and has normal hormone levels. Seems like much of what I read is another variation of the “eat right and exercise and you’ll be healthier” mantra. Well, duh.

Hmm. I had heard that certain things in large amounts (kale) can throw off thyroid function. And I wonder if the use of sea salt vs. iodized salt in modern cooking can have negative effect.

But unless you are out of the “normal” range it seems kind of pointless.

Well yeah opiate abuse is still a huge problem.

This is the key statement. I don’t know if using non-iodized salt puts the average person at risk for goiter. But, I believe sea salt has some iodine in it anyway.

I’m on synthetic thyroid hormones and I guarantee you they do not cause weight loss.

That would be Levoxyl or Levothyroxine.
